As a general rule batteries are not used in a modern Solar pump system, mainly due to maintenance problems.
Storage is usually done by way of water tanks.
Ideally the solar system would be set up at the dam or bore and the water would be pumped up to a storage tank where it can be gravity fed to the end use when needed.
Maximum Power Point Trackers are used to provide maximum performance of the solar module to the pump.
This can be further enhanced by use of a tracking system to get maximum out of the daylight hours.
